Secha pri Kerzhentse - Ivan Ivanov-Vano & Yuriy Norshteyn (1971)

La batalla de Kerzhenets / The battle of Kerzhenets

Ivan Pyetrovich Ivanov-Vano (Russian: Ива́н Петро́вич Ивано́в-Вано́) (February 8, 1900, Moscow – March 25, 1987, Moscow) was a Soviet animator and Russian animation director, sometimes called the "Patriarch of Soviet animation".

He graduated from Vkhutemas in 1923 and began working at the State Film Technicum in 1929. Since 1939 he was teaching at VGIK (he was granted the title of professor in 1952) where he taught Bulgarian animator Todor Dinov among others, through 1987. He was a member of the Communist Party since 1951, and was also a founder and the original Vice President of ASIFA from 1961 to 1973.

Ivanov-Vano was a laureate of numerous festivals.

The Battle of Kerzhenets (Russian: Се́ча при Ке́рженце; tr.:Secha pri Kerzhentse) is a 1971 Soviet/Russian animated film directed by Ivan Ivanov-Vano and Yuriy Norshteyn. The film is set to music by Rimsky-Korsakov and uses Russian frescoes and paintings from the 14th-16th centuries (which are animated using 2-dimensional stop motion animation).

The story is based on the legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh (made into a 4-act opera by Rimsky-Korsakov in 1907), which disappears under the waters of a lake to escape an attack by the Mongols (Russia was under the Mongol-Tartar yoke for a period of three centuries in the Middle Ages). The film itself follows the legend only loosely, however, and its highpoint is a battle between the Russian soldiers and the Mongol hordes, symbolizing a clash of cultures (the Virgin Mary appears early in the film, in effect watching over the Russian side of the battle).
