Mr. Pascal - Alison de Vere (1979)

Sr. Pascal

"Old Mr. Pascal dreams of his youth as he sits beside a crucifix. He then decides to liberate the tortured figure of Christ and the world about him is transformed."
(IMDb)

"Mr. Pascal directed and drawn by Alison De Vere concerns an elderly shoe-maker, living alone now and dreaming of his youth and better times. The film commences in sketched black and white as we see Mr Pascal on a bench outside a church, watching passers by but isolated from them. Colour is introduced to the movie as he remembers his work as a cobbler, his wife and child watching on. Affixed to the church wall is a life-size figure of Christ on the crucifix. In a sudden fit of compassion for the tortured figure, the old man collects his tools from the shop returning to free Christ from the nails attaching him to the cross. He attends to the stigmata, wraps the figure in a blanket and lights a bonfire, created from the cross itself and the crown of thorns. He is joined by other companions of the night, a very mixed gathering that is rewarded by a night of miracles. Thus Mr Pascal frees himself from his woes and releases light and colour into the world, both symbolically and literally. This is an utter delight, and although it sits more in an Easter screening than the run up to Christmas, it is such an optimistic and invigorating movie, one I remember well from festivals in the 1990s when I first saw it. Technically and artistically Alison was adept. For example it is the tapping of the nails into the shoes of Mr Pascal's dreams that links with the wounds of Christ. All this is beautifully drawn. When the festivities begin the music of John Smith on guitar and Derek Hodson on flute, together with the now vibrant colour, create something very special. Similarly, the bursting into bloom of a blossom tree beside the church as Mr Pascal awakes from his slumbers is a most touching conclusion. She was nominated for a Best Short Film BAFTA for the 1974 film and won the Gran Prix at the Annecy Festival. Alison worked as design director on the The Beatle’s Yellow Submarine animation and contributed the Eleanor Rigby image used in the sequence for the song. She had a fitting training regime, working for Halas and Batchelor for five years during the early '50s. No training can have been better. Alison died in 2001 at the age of 73. I post about lots of movies, old and new, and thanks to those terrific collectors, in this case on YouTube, it is an absolute honour to be allowed an appreciation of such enchanting works and their creators. The seven minute movie begins my wind down to Christmas. Shorter posts to come on movies of a seasonal nature. Then a few selections of my movies of the year. Alison's may just be there!"

Pojedynek - Waldemar Mordarski (2002)

El Duelo / The Duel

"Two Knights duel in the forest. One of them disappears and becomes a man fighting himself; a fight he finds much more difficult."

- VV.DD. (2007)

Drogarse: es divertido, pero apesta / Hooked: it's fun, but it sucks

“A film that offers a reflection on addiction: we see the characters struggling, trapped in the gears of mechanisms, in the proper sense, which they can’t escape.”

The self reinforcing mechanism reminds of Hotel California, where “you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave”.

Accro (short for accroché, which is French for addicted; or better: hooked) is a short animated movie by three students of the Ensad: Marie Opron, Léonard Cohen, David Martin. (...)"

Kodomo no Keijijogaku - Koji Yamamura (2007)

"A child whose head is numerals, a child who winds his own face and has it under his arm. What was left is his identity, a child whose eyes are provided by fishes, a child who lies down on the floor and head-butts his identity, a child who cannot say anything because of a zipper across his mouth. He undo the zipper but under it is another zipper...
Ecology and philosophy of children with sadness and humour."

"A head full of figures, a zipped up mouth inside a zipped up mouth, a spooling face, two eyes supported by fish. In distorting children’s bodies, Yamamura skillfully captures their mode of life. This is a philosophical Yamamura world that humorously and satirically depicts contemporary conditions surrounding children."

"Kōji Yamamura (山村 浩二 Yamamura Kōji, born June 4, 1964) is a Japanese independent animator who, since leaving a career as a background artist at an animation studio, currently[when?] directs, writes, edits, animates, creates the model sheets and background art for and sometimes produces his own short films and has worked on many commissions such as music videos, television advertisements, title sequences and station idents, both on his own and under or with other directors. He is also a regular illustrator of children's literature and textbooks. His animation spans a variety of media, his earliest independent works mixing clay painting and stop motion with cels, but has latterly come to concentrate on traditional animation. Two of his most famous and acclaimed films are the Academy Award for Animated Short Film-nominated and Cristal d'Annecy-winning Mt. Head and the Ottawa Grand Prize and Ōfuji Noburō Award-winning A Country Doctor. His 2011 short film Muybridge's Strings was one of five animated shorts nominated for Genie Award.
(...)Yamamura was born in Nagoya and studied painting at Tokyo Zokei University. His 2002 movie Mt. Head (Atama Yama) won the short film award for the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, the Grand Prize at the 2004 Zagreb World Festival of Animated Films and was nominated for the Academy Award for Animated Short Film. Yamamura won the 2007 Ottawa Grand Prix with his animated adaptation of Franz Kafka's "A Country Doctor." Both of the films were included in the Animation Show of Shows.

Boccioni's Bike - Skip Battaglia (1981)

""Boccioni’s Bike" is a personally animated lyrical interpretation of the movements of a bicyclist depicted in the graphic style of the Italian Futurists. “Boccioni’s Bike” is also a homage to the wheel and to rotational movement, the basis of our passing mechanical civilization.

Finally, not about a bicycle, but about acceleration.

This is the first film Battaglia drew, and evidence of his learning is in the image as he drew the film "straight ahead.""

"I am interested in abstracting imagery from a variety of working processes, and putting these into movement on film. The imagery is either drawn by hand frame-by-frame directly onto paper before shooting on film, or captured and modified by hand for a frame-by-frame film production. I work so that each short animated film engages the audience's perception and educates that perception on how the work must be viewed. My works therefore are not structured as commercial narratives, but are, rather, graphic musings on themes like: acceleration, the starry sky, looking, landscape. Continuities in my film are not provided by assembly-line smoothness, but by movement, sound design, argument, and emotion."

Yankale - Gil Alkabetz (1995)

Inglés / English | No subs

"This film considers the case of Jakob L (Yankale), a lowly civil servant who fails to turn up to work one day. We get to know more about him, his life, his childhood, and above all his relationship with his oppressive mother. His childhood is portrayed as a peaceful island, where time and formalities do not exist. The contrast between the square shapes of the office world and the rounded, organic forms of the sea and the island emphasize the conflict between our desires and our duties. This film won eight prizes at international film festivals."

Satiemania - Zdenko Gasparovic (1978)

The Yugoslavian film "Satiemania" by Zdenko Gasparovic, is the most relentlessly violent film I have seen since "Fantasmagorie". However, where Emile Cohl's use of violence was merely for comic effect, Gasparovic's use of violence has a creepier effect, and of course, a more metaphoric meaning. It doesn't hurt that these strange images are complimented with the music of Erik Satie. Actually, this film is a great introduction to his work, although it leaves out his best known (and my favorite) piece, "Gymnopedie No. 1". This is forgivable though, for it leaves more room to introduce more works by this overlooked composer, none of which I had heard before I first saw this film.

Some of the imagery reminds me of a surreal sequence from Ralph Bakshi's "Heavy Traffic", specifically the parts with the fast paced music. There is one such part in "Satiemania" that is almost painful to watch. It is a rapidly paced montage of various cartoon characters getting shot, stabbed, beaten, and maimed, all in explicit, gory detail. I have a feeling this could be a reflection of Gasparovic's rage at being an unfulfilled artist. I looked up his filmography on the Internet Movie Database. Not only was Satiemania not even listed (something I later corrected), but his only two credits were as an animator. One for the original "Scooby-Doo" TV show, and one for that awful Canadian made film "The Nutcracker Prince" (1990). No wonder he's angry! I don't blame him.

Of course, some of the violent, disturbing imagery had a less jarring, but more haunting effect. Probably the most unsettling (and my favorite) image comes from a sequence set to a slow, melodic piece. An old, dinosaur-like woman eats a piece of cake. She bites great chunks off and gnaws on them greedily, spewing pieces everywhere. Then, without even flinching, she bites off the last piece. ALONG WITH HALF HER HAND! Blood spews everywhere, but the lady takes no notice. She continues to chew, staring blankly into the camera, as it slowly zooms forward. I get chills just thinking about that image, an excellent metaphor for all consuming greed.
