Crulic - drumul spre dincolo (2011)

Crulic - El camino al más allá / Crulic - The path to beyond
Rumano/Polaco/Inglés - Romanian/Polish/English | Subs: Castellano (propios), English

Haunted by the commotion provoked by the death of a man —especially so because this death came about with the slow rhythm of self-induced hunger and bitter frustration— and stricken by Claudiu Crulic’s “contemplation of his own death” during his tragic hunger strike in a Cracow jail, Rumanian filmmaker Anca Damian documents a human death starting from two broad formal challenges: to reach harmony in the use of the diverse animation techniques that shape this artistic documentary; and to correctly articulate the firstperson narrator’s voice —the voice of a protagonist who is already dead and talks to us from the comfort of an implausible hereafter. Rumanian actor Vlad Ivanov —known for films such as Porumboiu’s Police, Adjective and Mungiu’s4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days among others—is in charge of lending his voice to young Crulic.

Handmade drawings, stop-motion frame-by-frame animation techniques, as well as a series of collages using Claudiu Crulic’s photos and personal belongings orchestrate, with burning visual and musical beauty, a tale about a death that makes viewers to feel its dramatic weight in their own shoulders. Claudiu Crulic was unjustly jailed in Poland accused of stealing credit cards belonging to a judge. From day one of detention, he decided to go into a hunger strike. Devastated by the indifference of his own country (Rumania), the inoperative Polish system of justice and the perseverance shown in his strike, after months of rigorous fast Crulic’s health was irreversibly deteriorated. By the time the medical staff of the prison decided to move him into a hospital it was too late and he died a few hours after arrival. The scandal had serious consequences both for Poland and Rumania and it would lead to the demission of the Rumanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and a penal accusation against three Polish physicians for their possible responsibility in Crulic’s death.

With unusual artistic courage, Anca Damian chooses an original way to put forward a social denunciation and to documentary filmmaking. In Crulic – The Path to Beyond, Damian and her crew present us with one of the most aesthetically beautiful marvels of contemporary cinema.

(Crulic—drumul spre dincolo). Whoever said dead men tell no tales hasn’t met Crulic. In Anca Damian’s visually inventive film, he even narrates the events following his demise, including his body’s identification in the morgue and his coffin’s transportation along windy roads in a quest for burial. Viewers soon learn that Crulic died during a hunger strike in Poland. His protest served as a last gesture against false imprisonment on the charge that he stole money from a judge. Crulic’s ghost haunts this tale in a calm and detached manner, retracing the steps that brought him to a sham trial defined by a casual absurdity that rivals some of the most distressing moments in Kafka. Drawing from actual events, the film’s beautifully layered mix of watercolor backdrops, collage cutouts, photographs, and live-action animation intensifies the stark injustice of Crulic’s fate, while visualizing his vanishing memory. Crulic calls for us to heed history—by coming to terms with a wrongful death that has not yet been put to rest.
