La Metamorfosis del Sr. Samsa es un trabajo interesante y digno de ser visto en la medida en que, adaptar al film las obras de dicho escritor no es una tarea nada simple, en contraste con la simpleza de la técnica empleada por la animadora en su elaboración: modelado de figuras en arena fina sobre una placa de vidrio con un fondo de luz, aportando esta combinación la creación de un ambiente lúgubre y claustrofóbico, que enfatiza en las sombras y elimina prácticamente los detalles, perfecto para una adaptación Kafkiana.

Leaf se desmarca de las tendencias actuales en el cine de animación, en el que la tecnología ha invadido todo y reivindica su labor de artista en manipulación continua con los materiales: "Nunca me ha parecido interesante utilizar ordenadores para desarrollar mi trabajo como animadora. Me gusta meter las manos en los materiales, manipularlos. Ver cómo materiales inertes cobran movimiento y toman cualquier forma que mi mente sea capaz de imaginar".

Esta obra animada ha sido acreditada con varios premios, entre los que destacan la Mención Honorífica (Categoria Arte y Cultura) del International Film and Video Festival, Columbus 1980; Premio Especial del Jurado, International Animation Festival, Ottawa 1978; Premio de la Crítica, International Animated Film Festival, Annecy 1977; entre otros.

"For the majority of viewers today animation means either Disney, Pixar or Japan. Or something just for children or light entertainment for children and adults or for some weirdos that look for hentai. A few know that Canada has some of the best animators worldwide. Norman McLaren, Frederick Back, Paul Driessen, Ryan Larkin to name a few, that influenced animation and even cinema forever. Caroline Leaf is one of them.

Kafka's works have always been a headache for film directors. How can his work, full of symbolism and nightmarish scenes, Freudian undertones and unique narrative be transferred on film?

Animation could offer an alternative way and this is exactly what Caroline Leaf tries to accomplish here. If you've read the original short novel of Kafka then you'll feel familiar. If not try to read it first since it will help a lot in appreciating the effort of the animator.

My only complaint is that she chose to animate Samsa as an actual cockroach, while in the novel this works rather symbolically. On the other hand the sound department excels and the way Samsa hears and grasps the sound or utters of his family is perfectly transferred from the novel. Despite the somehow blatant depiction of Samsa as a cockroach, the unique animation technique of C. Leaf produces marvels and sometimes it even transcends the book narrative and it offers even an alternative way, only very few could imagine. Samsa's sister looks a lot like Kafka's sister from the photographs.

This short animated film is a must watch for animation fans and for those who read the works of Franz Kafka and other similar authors.

Animation for adults can mean something else besides sex and violence and this is exactly what this film is about."

En un mercado popular, una alfarera vende sin mucha suerte sus ollas de barro cocido, al contrario de la vendedora del frente, quien vende sus ollas como pan caliente. Atraída por la curiosidad la joven alfarera decide investigar cuál es ese secreto que hace que las ollas de esta misteriosa mujer sean tan apreciadas por todo el pueblo, cuál es esa magia que infunde tal espíritu a estas pequeñas ollas.

Un lindo cortometraje, elaborado en claymotion, que fusiona rasgos culturales amazónicos y andinos, dotado de un profundo sentido ritual; una linda metáfora del sentido mágico del creador en relación a su creación, vista desde la perspectiva de estos pueblos.

"Juan Manuel Costa nació en la ciudad de Salta. Desde hace mas de 6 años se dedica a la investigación y experimentación en la animación stopmotion.

Ha dirigido dos cortometrajes animados: “El Birque (génesis)” y “Elvira” con los que ha obtenido mas de una veintena de premios tanto nacionales como internacionales.

Divertido y conmovedor corto de animación sobre un niño con una imaginación desbordante. Driessen nos presenta dos mundos - la realidad y la fantasía. En este cuento el joven protagonista, aburrido de su vida imagina grandes aventuras. Pero cuando nuestro supuesto héroe se encuentra ante un verdadero peligro en su vida - en forma de un iceberg – no puede creer lo que ve. De repente, la vida mundana de la que siempre quiso escapar es lo único que desea recuperar.

Paul Driessen nace en Nimega (Holanda) en 1940. A los 6 años, debido al trabajo de su padre, se traslada a vivir a Moscú. Tras regresar a Holanda y después de finalizar la carrera de Bellas Artes, empieza a trabajar para Jim Hiltz en Cinecartooncentre, un pequeño estudio centrado, sobre todo, en la publicidad.

Jim Hiltz le enseña cuatro principios fundamentales: la anticipación precede a la reacción, la reacción sucede a la acción, el equilibrio y la silueta.

En 1967, George Dunning los invita a trabajar en la película “El Submarino Amarillo” ("Yellow Submarine"). Posteriormente, Dunnig ayudará a Driessen a emigrar a Canadá, donde éste se convierte en 1972 en miembro del National Film Board de Canadá. Desde entonces, Paul Driessen ha desarrollado su trabajo entre Holanda y Montreal.

El estilo peculiar de este artista hace que sus obras sean fácilmente reconocibles. Se basa, sobre todo, en dibujos de líneas dinámicas. Los dibujos más simples sobre fondos neutros de sus primeros trabajos dan paso, más tarde, a obras más coloridas y complejas. Sus personajes se caracterizan por sus movimientos torpes pero a la vez fluidos.

Además, en múltiples ocasiones, divide la pantalla en varias partes cuyas acciones se entretejen e interactúan, llegando a extremos desquiciantes pero, a la vez, estupendos.

Varios de sus cortos han obtenido múltiples premios y reconocimientos. Por ejemplo, "3 Misses" optó al Oscar como mejor corto de animación.

También ha escrito e ilustrado algunos libros, The Fiddle Fumble Stories, que siguen la línea marcada por los cortometrajes animados.

Podríamos definir la obra de Paul Driessen en dos palabras: Imaginación extrema.

Una extraña familia convive plácidamente entre sus tres integrantes: un enfermizo hombre azul, una gran gallina y una antropomórfica oruga. Todo se mantendrá en calma hasta que alguien llama a la puerta; una tremenda visita que destruirá el mundo rutinario en el que vivían estos personajes.

Este film fue ganador de los premios: 

Ottawa 90 International Animation Festival, Grand Prize; The Second Shanghai International Animation film Festival 1992, Special Jury Prize; International Animation Festival Krok, Kiev 90, Best Film in category: productions over 10 min; Nominación en 1990 al Palma de Oro, al Mejor Cortometraje Animado, en Cannes, entre otros.

"Nacido en ucrania en 1954, Igor Kovalayov, co-fundador de la legendaria escuela de animación experimental de Moscú, es un prestigioso animador que basicamente es conocido por ser el creador de series tan famosas como "Rugrats", "AAAHH!! Real Monsters" o "Duckman".

En 1991, Kovalyov aceptó una invitación de Gabor Csupo, para trabajar en el estudio de Klasky-Csupo en Hollywood, en donde trabajó en la serie animada "AAAHH!! Real monsters" y dirigió posteriormente la película basada en la serie, "Rugrats" de la cual es también creador.

Kovalyov mantiene una interesante relación con el estudio, el cual le financia sus cortos más personales a cambio de trabajos más comerciales y este se beneficia del prestigio que suele acompañar los trabajos del animador ucraniano.

Menos conocida resulta sin embargo, su faceta como animador experimental e independiente, con una interesantíma trayectoria que le ha valido una infinidad de premios internacionales por cortos como "Hen His Wife" (1989, Pilot Studio, Moscow), "Andrei Svislotsky" (Pilot Studio, Moscow, 1991) "Bird in the Window" (1996, Klasky Csupo, USA) "Flying Nansen", (2000, Klasky Csupo), "Milch" (2004, Klasky Csupo) . (...) Realizado en 1989, Yego zhena kuritsa marca sin duda, algunas de las obsesiones recurrentes del personal estilo de Kovalyov.

Sin llegar a alcanzar el grado de complejidad de Andrei Svislotsky, Hen his Wife (titulo occidental) roza la pura abstraccion. Como en A. Svislotsky el argumento es casi inexistente y se convierte en un pretexto para desarrollar su orgánico universo personal, lleno de comportamientos ritualizados, a menudo absurdos, donde detalles aparentemente insignificantes acaban adquiriendo sentido en el conjunto. "A long-married couple, somewhere past middle age, live a quiet routine of half-contentment. He sits in a big easy chair reading the paper and puts a (very beautiful, haunting, folk-operatic/cantorial)song on his record player, using a wind-up blue bus instead of a needle. She refills the hot water in his footbath and puts down food for the "dog," a kind of caterpillar-dachshund with a leery human head (their eraserhead son?. Kovalyov is a master animator of the uncanny- the familiar made strange- and his all-too-human monstrosities convulse across the screen with the expressive depth of actors in a silent melodrama, but more, and stranger. Strangeness is the property liberally dribbled onto the reality rendered here in pen and ink- depth, rhythm, texture, cause and effect- all shift and shiver as the laws of cartoon physics, and metaphysics, jump and jive to the tempo of this universal human story."
